FAQ Madiha

Frequently asked questions about your vacation at drivethru surf camp in Madiha, Sri Lanka.

Before starting the trip

  • What is the weather like in Sri Lanka?

Hot! More information on the weather in Sri Lanka can be found here. Information about the surf season can be found here.

  • What is the cost of living in Sri Lanka?

The costs for food and public transport are quite low for Western European conditions. A few examples: Local food costs the equivalent of about 2.00 euros. A 1-hour bus or train ride costs about 1.00 euro. In fancier restaurants meals cost from around 10.00 to 20.00 euros.

  • What are the health risks in Sri Lanka?

Do not worry, a trip to Sri Lanka poses no special risks, or even threats. Since it is a tropical country, there are a few things that you should consider when making travel arrangements and when you are on the road: Health in Sri Lanka

Concerning the vaccinations, the same recommendations apply to Sri Lanka as for any other tropical countries: Recommendations of the Tropical Institute

For adequate sun protection in the water, we recommend in any case you bring, a long-sleeved Lycra and a sunscreen with SPF 50. Zinc paste for the face and lips will help you survive the day in the water unharmed, a mosquito spray will get you safely through the night. A small first aid kit that includes, for example, disinfectant spray, ear drops and waterproof Band-Aids, can never hurt either. To protect your ears while surfing, we additionally recommend you pack a pair of ear plugs. Brands such as EQ Seals, Doc’s Proplug, SurfEars or Tecfen Medical offer an ideal and affordable product for everyone’s needs.

Finally, we would recommend that you get travel insurance. That way you’ll be protected for an emergency. Should an emergency occur, the Asiri Hospital Matara is located nearby: Asiri Hospital Matara

  • Do I need any specific vaccinations to travel to Sri Lanka?

Yes. The Institute of Tropical Medicine recommends tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and rabies. More information can be found on tropeninstitut.de

  • Are there any specific arrival days?

No, however, no surf lessons take place Saturday and Sunday.

  • Can/should I bring my own surfboard?

If you’d like, you are more than welcome to! Basically, we have a wide selection of surfboards. From Short to Long and more. However, most airlines to Sri Lanka allow you to take your surfboard with you at no additional cost if the total weight is not exceeded.

  • What else should I pack?

Bread, cheese, sausages and chocolate for the team! On the other hand, you can leave one of your long pants at home (or all of them). Otherwise, bug spray and plenty of sun protection in the form of a cap, long-sleeved Lycra, leggings and sunscreen should not be missed.

Entry and arrival

  • Do I need a visa to enter the country?

Tourists need a visa to travel to Sri Lanka. You can apply for one online at www.eta.gov.lk or be charged upon arrival at the airport. We recommend the online version. More information can be found here: Information of the Foreign Ministry to Sri Lanka.

  • What do I have to consider when transferring from the airport to the camp?

Arrivals and departures are possible every day. The nearest international airport is Colombo (CMB), where we will pick you up. Look out for the friendly person with the sign “drivethru Surfcamp”.

Please let us know your arrival time and flight number at least one week before your vacation starts, so that we can organize your pickup in time. And please also indicate how many boards you are bringing and how long they are. Thank you!

  • How do I find my transfer driver at the airport?

He finds you! And if not, he will be waiting IN the arrival area and has a sign in hand with your name on it.

  • I would like to book a transfer for the arrival, but decide on departure on the spot, is that possible?

Yes, this is not a problem. You can book your transfer up to two days before departure at the camp.

  • I am already in Sri Lanka before my stay with drivethru and want to travel on my own - how do I find you?

We are located in the village “Madiha”, 10 Tuk Tuk-mintues away from Matara. There you can ask about “Alex Place” or directly about “drivethru”. Many people in the village know us and will point you in the right direction. Otherwise you can find us on Google Maps under “drivethru Surfcamps”.
